Local Teachers Spend Their Summer Learning About Local Business

From turkeys, to tents, to manufacturing, to teeth, to marketing, to hospitals, to architects, local teachers spent their summer learning about careers in Mercer and Auglaize counties.  For the last three years, the Auglaize Mercer Business Education Alliance (AMBE) has hosted business tours in the summer for teachers in Mercer and Auglaize counties. These tours allow teachers to learn about local businesses.  The purpose of the tour is to provide teachers an opportunity to view work at local businesses, learn what businesses are looking for in employees, as well as education and training expectations.

The summer teacher tours are held over six days in June and July.  On each day, teachers tour 5 to 6 local businesses in Mercer and Auglaize County.  More than 40 local teachers participated.

The businesses participating included:  Coopers, Tru-Edge, ITR, Taylor Communications, Totally Promotional, Marketing Essentials, Sprout Digital, Minster Dental, Precision Strip, Moeller Brew Barn, Pax Machine, Fanning Howey, Celina Moving and Storage, Ergo Desktop, AAP, Grand Lake Health, General Aluminum, Midwest Elastomers, Celina Tent, Celina Insurance, Tri Star, Mercer Health, 49 Degrees, Signature 4, Crown Equipment Corporation, and Garmann Miller

 Quotes provided by the teachers:

“The tours were a great idea! Changing the mindset that all students need a four year degree as a measure of success is not always the case as presented during some of the tours. This is valuable information teachers and parents need to be aware of.”

“These tours were excellent! This was some of the best professional development I’ve had.”

“It was great to be exposed to these businesses to learn more about our communities and what’s expected of our students.”

“More teachers need to be aware of the treasures we have in our two-county area and I’ll do my best to share with them!”

The purpose of the AMBE organization is to continue to build the relationships between the area schools and businesses.

AMBE, along with Hometown Opportunity, Mercer County, Auglaize County, Darke County, and Shelby County will be hosting an event this fall for high school seniors at Eldora Speedway.
